Cardboard Cowboy Cutouts Announce First New Release in Over a Year — “Sad Country Song,” Arriving January 9, 2026

After more than 25 years of championing authentic, roots-driven country music, the Cardboard Cowboy Cutouts are celebrating a major new milestone: the release of “Sad Country Song” on January 9, 2026.

Written by longtime member Ritchie Ritchison and songwriter John Niven, the track marks the band’s first new music in over a year and the beginning of an ambitious new era.

Formed in 1999, the Cardboard Cowboy Cutouts have built a legacy around real musicianship and an ever-growing musical family. While the band’s core lineup includes guitar, lead guitar, pedal steel, fiddle, bass, and drums, more than 100 musicians have contributed to the group’s sound — including harmonica, piano, organ, saxophone, and the beloved “Cardboard Cowgirl Cutouts” providing harmonies.

In keeping with the band’s tradition, any musician who has ever played with the Cutouts is welcome to step onstage at any show. This living, breathing lineup — including members who can no longer be with us — is the heart of the group’s identity.

In 2026, the Cutouts will dedicate the entire year to studio work, recording as many originals and unique, creative covers as possible. With every member juggling other professional projects, the band is using this rare stretch of open time to create a deep catalog of material before returning to the road.

“Sad Country Song” opens the door to this new chapter — a classic heartbreak track built on the tones and textures that have defined the band since day one.

Fans can follow the journey across all major platforms, and stream “Sad Country Song” everywhere January 9, 2026.
